Trailblazing Leader-Funding-Applicant, Jerba Campervans, Nominated for ‘Rural Employer’ Award at the Scottish Rural Awards
Community members from Tyne Esk LEADER’s Local Action Group and the Programme Co-ordinator will be attending the Scottish Rural Awards 2018 to support one of our applicants whose company has been nominated for an award.
Jerba Campervans, based near North Berwick, founded by Simon Poole and Catherine Brooke, is a finalist for the ‘Rural Employer’ award.
Jerba Campervans is trailblazing in a variety of ways. It is Scotland’s only Volkswagen registered campervan conversion business, and one of only four Volkswagen certified bodybuilders in the UK. In particular, Jerba is known for having designed and patented a unique detachable roof unit, and offering bespoke campervans with customisation of colours and shapes of units.
In terms of rural employment, Jerba Campervans is an anchor-business, having located to its current site, Halflandbarns near North Berwick, to which other high-end rural lifestyle businesses soon followed. This has created the right conditions for an oasis of high quality rural employment opportunities. Tyne Esk LEADER awarded a grant of £51,000 towards a workshop extension enabling Jerba Campervans to capitalise on its patented roof design and create additional quality rural jobs.
The company continues to innovate as, in early 2018, Simon and Catherine sold the business to an employee owned trust. The trust owns all the company shares and all employees are now beneficiaries of the business and share in company profits making Jerba Campervans the kind of company Tyne Esk LEADER has been delighted to support.
