
Eligible projects are those involving rural transport initiatives, providing new or developing community facilities with particular emphasis on young people and other target groups, introducing or developing childcare provision, remote access IT provision to training courses/materials. In addition, improving access to areas of high environmental amenity and innovative approaches to local rural services.

Title: Aberlady Community Woodland Regeneration Project

A project that to restore an old stonewall, defining the approach to the village from Haddington and Gullane, back to its former glory. To follow a portion of the original wall from the corner round to a natural entrance into the woodland. To fence off the remaining roadside perimeter of the woodland and replant the hedgerows that have now all but disappeared. To create a cambered woodland path along the whole of the woodland extending to the caravan park. The pathway will be accessed by all in the area including the disabled or people with mobility.

The project will upgrade and enhance the Flag Heritage Centre and Saltire Memorial at Athelstaneford, the birthplace of the national flag. A new audio and lighting control system will be installed at the centre and the story of the flag told in six foreign languages to enhance the four-star tourist attraction.

The project includes the reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon cross found during excavations in the area. Aberlady was an important Anglo-Saxon centre and has yielded the largest concentration of Anglo-Saxon artefacts yet found in Scotland. The remaining fragment of the cross can still be seen and experts believe it is the closest sculptural representation in existence of the illuminated artwork in the renowned Lindisfarne Gospels. The reconstruction of the five-metre high cross will be erected in the Memorial Garden adjacent to the medieval kirk together with interpretive artwork
Title: Restoration of Yester Kirk Organisation: Yester Kirk Restoration Fund LEADER Funding Awarded: £50,000 Area: East Lothian This project will repair all structural damage to the building and to furnish the interior to provide the facilities required to meet the needs of the community e.g. create a community wing and develop a kitchen space.
Title: Training in traditional building skills with Midlothian Training Services Organisation: Penicuik House Preservation Trust LEADER Funding Awarded: £45,149 Area: East Lothian/ Midlothian The Penicuik House Preservation Trust aims to work with Midlothian Training Services (MTS) to broaden the audience of the Penicuik House Project training programme and to enhance the training and work experience being delivered by MTS on the Get Ready for Work programme. The stone boundary wall at the entrance to the Penicuik estate requires rebuilding and provides an ideal training programme for the MTS construction related trainees to learn dry stone walling techniques and masonry repairs. Title: Macmerry Lives Organisation: The Living Memory Association LEADER Funding Awarded: £11,910 Area: East Lothian Exciting grass roots project helping to revitalise the local Macmerry community by giving people pride in their village and its past. The project aims to · gather people’s memories of life in Macmerry over the years; its industry, its community, its history. · have an intergenerational focus as the memories gathered will be shared bringing old and young together. · produce a book, exhibition and website to celebrate the work of those involved in the project. · creating a reusable historical resource which can be used by future generations. · To offer training in necessary skills to build the capacity of the local community to undertake further community history projects.
Title: St Andrew’s Church, in ruin, Gullane, Stabilisation and Interpretation Organisation: Gullane and Dirleton History Society Area: Amount: £29,157 The project aims to stabilise the masonry structure by removal of the ivy growing on it, repointing the walls and sealing the wallheads to improve its appearance and secure its future for at least the next 100 years. The history of the structure and its use will be investigated, recorded and a report will be produced. The latter will be placed in appropriate national archives. Title: Skilled Up Organisation: Mayfield and Easterhouses Youth 2000 Project LEADER Funding Awarded: £49,874 Area: Midlothian A project aimed at increasing participation and involvement of young people engaging in a wide range of informal educational opportunities, informed and shaped by them.

The project will offer free counselling to families identified by referrers, as experiencing emotional difficulties. The project will offer a safe, supportive and confidential environment within which such issues can be professionally addressed
Title: Howgate Health and History Organisation: Howgate Village Hall Association LEADER Funding Awarded: £14,203 Area: Midlothian The aim of the project is to bring as many people together as possible, increasing involvement through the introduction of new activities, education, research, recruit volunteers, employment opportunities, increase participation, offer choices, develop new skills and create an opportunity to enable us to bridge the generation age gap within the village. Title: Route YC Organisation: North Berwick Dry Bar Association Ltd (Youth Cafe) LEADER Funding Awarded: £50,000 Area: East Lothian To work in a sustained way with young people who have social, emotional, behavioural and family issues that are barriers to their learning and personal growth, to increase their confidence and self esteem and to improve their life skills and chances.
Title: Dog Watch - Who’s Watching You Organisation: East Lothian Council LEADER Funding Awarded: £5,164 Area: East Lothian This project aims to empower local communities by giving them the knowledge, confidence and means to challenge offenders and allow offences to be brought to the attention of the enforcement agencies without fear of comeback. The project also aims to raise awareness of this issue across the whole community, act as a constant reminder of the legal and moral obligations placed on dog owners and to reward good citizenship. Title: Loanehead Working, Playing and Learning Together Employees Organisation: Loanhead Community Learning Centre LEADER Funding Awarded: £100,000 Area: Midlothian Loanhead Community Learning Association’s aim is to create a new community managed facility and outdoor space in Loanhead, Midlothian to develop and deliver sustainable community services. The project will build a new facility comprising of; a café; a community garden to supply food for the café; a ‘green room’ for environmental studies; an art room; a recording studio; space for a Midlothian Sure Start family support and capacity building project, a soft play/sensory room and an outdoor play area.

Title: Cranstoun Community Development Project – Phase 1 Organisation: Cranstoun Crichton and Ford Parish Church LEADER Funding Awarded: £35,000 Area: Midlothian Cranstoun Crichton & Ford Parish Church has been awarded £35,000 to adapt the church so that in addition to being a place of worship, it will provide a multi-purpose facility to allow the extension of community activities to a much wider group, particularly the elderly, single parents and children. Title: East Linton Community Hall Roof and Repointing Organisation: East Linton and District Community Association LEADER Funding Awarded: £13,181 Area: East Lothian This project will replace the slates on the village hall roof and repoint the North side of the building. The aim of this project is to keep the hall wind and watertight so that future generations can use this much used building. Title: Harbour Development Stage 2 Feasibility Study Organisation: Dunbar Harbour Trust LEADER Funding Awarded: £30,000 Area: East Lothian The aim of this stage of the project is to conduct wave and tide modelling to allow the DHT working with marine engineers to determine exactly what sort of additional harbour structure would be required to make Dunbar into an all weather harbour, a port of refuge on this exposed section of coastline
Title: Outreach Project Organisation: Midlothian Community Media Association LEADER Funding Awarded: £8,923.50 Area: Midlothian A mobile studio was to be purchased to provide more training and to involve groups in rural Midlothian and parts of East Lothian to create better quality pre-recorded programmes by having facilities on site in the community that match those in the fixed studio. Title: Audience and Infrastructure Development Initiative Organisation: Petter Potter Gallery Trust (Haddington) Ltd Area: Amount: £49,355 An Education Coordinator will use the gallery as a base for developing and delivering educational projects and events and the Audience Development Coordinator would be assigned the task of examining current consultation data, and widening the pool of data where they deem appropriate, in order to build on our strategic aims and actively contribute to the development of a Business Plan that the organisation would adopt and work to in order to improve long term viability. Title: Lighting up the Promenade Organisation: Cockenzie & Port Seton Community Council Area: Amount: £24,366 The “lighting up the promenade project” will provide an extended safe and secure space, which will be enjoyed by families, individuals and elderly community residents alike.
