
Eligible projects might;
• link businesses to supply chain through IT, provide new technology for small scale processing and packaging close to local produce, (thus adding value to local areas), focus on youth and young entrepreneurs, create links with research institutions to develop specialist products in a particular area (thus adding value). Home working would also be supported.
• be aimed at wider off farm non agricultural or forestry diversification, particularly rural micro enterprises aimed at employing women and young people e.g. craft workshops/outlets. They will encourage co-operation to create critical mass that provides economy of scale in production and marketing, e.g. small scale timber processing. All types of tourist activities, whether for accommodation, trails, interpretation signs/leaflets, marketing and community economic projects would be eligible under this theme.

The project will upgrade and enhance the Flag Heritage Centre and Saltire Memorial at Athelstaneford, the birthplace of the national flag. A new audio and lighting control system will be installed at the centre and the story of the flag told in six foreign languages to enhance the four-star tourist attraction.

The project includes the reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon cross found during excavations in the area. Aberlady was an important Anglo-Saxon centre and has yielded the largest concentration of Anglo-Saxon artefacts yet found in Scotland. The remaining fragment of the cross can still be seen and experts believe it is the closest sculptural representation in existence of the illuminated artwork in the renowned Lindisfarne Gospels. The reconstruction of the five-metre high cross will be erected in the Memorial Garden adjacent to the medieval kirk together with interpretive artwork and panels. Promotional leaflets for both the local community and tourists explaining the history of the cross will also be produced.

The Penicuik House Preservation Trust aims to work with Midlothian Training Services (MTS) to broaden the audience of the Penicuik House Project training programme and to enhance the training and work experience being delivered by MTS on the Get Ready for Work programme. The stone boundary wall at the entrance to the Penicuik estate requires rebuilding and provides an ideal training programme for the MTS construction related trainees to learn dry stone walling techniques and masonry repairs.

The project aims to stabilise the masonry structure by removal of the ivy growing on it, repointing the walls and sealing the wallheads to improve its appearance and secure its future for at least the next 100 years. The history of the structure and its use will be investigated, recorded and a report will be produced. The latter will be placed in appropriate national archives.

The key aims of this project are to address the rapidly growing problem of youth unemployment by equipping young people with skills and experience to give them an advantage in the construction skills market. It is envisaged in the first year the project will train up to 40 young people leaving school in 2009. The training programme is not part of the school main curriculum as it is aimed at those young people preparing to leave and who have just left.
